We present, communicate, and anchor contemporary art across the country for everyone.

Kunsthallene i Norge is a nationwide network consisting of 14 professional art institutions, from Kirkenes in the north to Kristiansand in the south. We present, communicate, and anchor contemporary art at a high professional level and constitute a central part of the national infrastructure for visual art. Our audience is at the center of our work.

Who We Are

Kunsthallene i Norge (KHiN) is an association for non-commercial art institutions and currently consists of 14 members. The purpose of the association is to safeguard the interests of the member institutions and to disseminate knowledge about art and the role of art in society, both nationally and internationally.

Together, we form a cornerstone of a vibrant art field characterized by high activity, artistic quality, and broad participation. We collaborate strategically to strengthen the role of art in society and to develop institutions, working conditions, and structures for both employees and artists at the national level.

What We Do

Kunsthallene i Norge focus on new artistic productions, often process-based and situated at the intersection of the national and international art field.

While the role of a museum is to preserve, historicize, and contextualize artists’ work, the role of a kunsthall is to spark debate and present what is happening in the field here and now.

We provide both established artists and new voices with a professional platform, serving as a springboard between artistic practice and larger institutional contexts.

As central actors in the art field, we are part of a knowledge- and value-based community that contributes to democratic development. The kunsthalls are open spaces for reflection, critical thinking, and artistic freedom of expression, and they play an important role in anchoring contemporary art within society.

Through our institutions and our programs, we help ensure a diverse and independent art field that offers the public broad and democratic access to relevant artistic expressions.

Ethical Guidelines

1

Artists are central to the operations of all member organizations. Kunsthallene I Norge provide professional support so that artists can achieve artistic, intellectual, technical, administrative, and financial goals, including remuneration for work performed within member organizations. Member organizations follow the Norwegian remuneration agreement for artists (Vederlagsavtalen).

Kunsthallene i Norge advocate for a permanent state honorarium system and aim to secure production budgets for exhibitions through the Arts Council’s operating grants.

2

Kunsthallene i Norge lead in the dissemination of art and culture and are spaces where cultural expressions are articulated. They recognize the audience as individuals with their own experience and knowledge, engaging with art independently.

3

Kunsthallene i Norge actively work to ensure that organizations represent societal diversity in structure and programming.

4

Kunsthallen i Norge are conscious of overconsumption and pollution and strive to minimize environmental impact as part of sustainable development goals. They aim to safeguard both human and non-human values.

5

Kunsthallene i Norge function as a network, fostering collaboration, advice, and mutual support.
